Local Team, Local Energy

A local success story since 2003

Lonsdale Energy was founded by the City of North Vancouver in 2003 and connected its first building in Lower Lonsdale in 2004.

More than two decades later, Lonsdale Energy supplies heat and hot water to almost 18,000 residents, 119 buildings and close to 10 million square feet of floor area through eight energy centres located throughout the service area.

Along the way, we’ve received multiple awards for our innovative approach from organizations such as the International District Energy Association, North Vancouver Chamber of Commerce, Union of B.C. Municipalities,  Quality Urban Energy Systems of Tomorrow, and Canadian Green Building Council.

Today, more than a quarter of all North Vancouver residents receive their heat and hot water from Lonsdale Energy, and this will continue to increase with ongoing growth in the Lonsdale area. Learn more about the value and work of Lonsdale Energy.

Notable projects

Nearly all high-rise developments in the last 20 years have joined our community energy network, including Centreview in Central Lonsdale, The Trophy at the Pier in the Shipyards District, and Founder’s Block in Moodyville.

Connected public facilities include North Vancouver City Library, the Shipyards District, Polygon Gallery, John Braithwaite Community Centre, and MONOVA.

Some of our standout projects include:

  • Queen Mary Community School: One of the first schools on the North Shore that was connected to Lonsdale Energy during a seismic and heritage restoration in 2014,
  • School District Educational Services Centre and Art Gallery: Contributing thermal energy from the earth to Lonsdale Energy through a geoexchange system added in 2012, and
  • Shipyards Skate Plaza: The only outdoor skating rink in Canada connected to a community energy system, diverting waste heat from ice-making to Lonsdale Energy while receiving cooling services to refrigerate the ice sheet since 2019.

Our next major project will break ground in late 2025: a sewer heat recovery centre set for completion in 2027 that will transform the heat from untreated sewage into usable heat source while significantly reducing Lonsdale Energy’s carbon footprint.
