Built in 1914, Queen Mary Community School has a vibrant and important history as one of the North Shore's first schools. It was known to members of the Squamish community as Hiyi kwemkwim-awtxw (roughly translated as "big red building/house" ).
In 2013, it went through an extensive seismic upgrade and heritage restoration. The rebuilding of Queen Mary Elementary was aimed at meeting high environmental standards. A number of design innovations were added to reflect the natural character of the area and reduce its impact on the environment. One feature added was a connection to the City's community energy system, allowing the building to be partially heated by Lonsdale Energy.
Queen Mary has been awarded the LEED Canada Gold standing from the Canada Green Building Council.
