In 2024, Lonsdale Energy was awarded a $17.5 million grant from the federal and provincial governments to support the design and construction of a new sewer heat recovery energy centre in North Vancouver. Raw sewage from Metro Vancouver’s North Vancouver Interceptor trunk line will be diverted to our energy centre, where we will extract heat before it travels to the wastewater treatment plant for cleaning.
The operational facility will include high-temperature water-to-water electric heat pumps with a heating capacity of at least 5MW. The project will also include environmental enhancements to the surrounding area near Mosquito Creek, as well as public realm enhancements.
It's anticipated to remove about 7,600 tonnes of CO2e emissions per year – equivalent to removing 2,700 cars from the road for a year – reducing Lonsdale Energy’s greenhouse gas emissions by 40% when it's completed sometime in 2027.
