Built in 1914, Queen Mary Community School has a vibrant and important history as one of the North Shore's first schools. It was known to members of the Squamish community as Hiyi kwemkwim-awtxw (roughly translated as "big red building/house").
In 2014, it went through an extensive seismic upgrade and heritage restoration. The rebuilding of Queen Mary Community School was aimed at meeting high environmental standards. A number of design innovations were added to reflect the natural character of the area and reduce its impact on the environment. One feature added was a connection to the City's community energy system, allowing the building to be partially heated by Lonsdale Energy.
The school has been certified as a LEED Gold building from the Canada Green Building Council.
